Fix for Windows Update Error: 80070005

Step: 1

  • Disable Windows Update
  • Click on Run, type services.msc and press ok
  • Navigate and right click on “Windows Update”
  • Click on stop
  • Navigate to: C:/Windows/ and find the folder named: “SoftwareDistribution” (SoftwareDistribution is a hidden folder)
  • Rename that folder to “SoftwareDistribution.old”
  • Enable Windows Update
  • Click on Run, type services.msc and press ok
  • Navigate and right click on “Windows Update”
  • Click on start (“SoftwareDistribution” folder will be re-created automatically)

Now check windows update, it should work now. If not please follow the step 2

 

 

Step: 2

 

  • Please download the subinacl.msi file from the following link and save the in desktop

  • Install the program and make a note of destination folder “C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\”
  • After installation navigate the destination and run subinacl.exe
  • Click on run and type notepad and press Enter
  • Copy the following commands and then paste them into the open Notepad window:

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f

 

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f

subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

 

@Echo =========================

@Echo Finished.

@Echo =========================

@pause

 

6. After pasting the above commands, please save as “fix.bat” as the file name and save it in desktop.

7. Double click the file and run (XP) / right click the fix.bat file, and then choose “Run as administrator” (Vista / Win7)

8. You will see a DOS window processing.

 

Note: It may take several minutes. Please be patient. When it is completed, you will be prompted with the message: “Finished, press any key to continue”.

 

Try to install the updates again and it should work now.
